How to get better nighttime photos with the Rebel XSi?

I got a Canon EOS Rebel XSi for Christmas and it's lovely, but I have issues with nighttime photography. I do not have a tripod, so what kind of settings should I put it on or what should I do to get the best night photos without a tripod? thanks
